Psalm 46:10
Be still and know that I am God!
In the business world, it is said that being still is equivalent to death of a business. It is said that you are either growing or declining, yet in this psalm, God is instructing us to be still.
Do we consider being still as inactivity? Is God asking us to just stand there and watch the world go by?
In Henry Blackaby’s book, Experiencing God, he reverses the common saying, “Just don’t stand there, do something.” to read, “Just don’t do something, stand there!”
What is God trying to say to us?
It’s my interpretation that being still is actually an intentional action; that truly being still is actively trusting God and fighting off all temptations to interfere in what God is trying to do in our life. To be still is to fight anxiety, worry, trust, surrender, patience, and control.
If you don’t believe me, do this test.
Grab your watch and time yourself once you decide to be still and trust God. How long does it take before you use the word “but”? It goes something like this. “Okay, God I’m going to be still and trust that you will work this or that out in my life… ah this feels good, oh BUT…”
“You don’t… I need to…” etc.
Okay be honest, how many seconds did it take?
Do you sense that like when a parent tells their child to go a sit down that dad’s going to take care of things, that the child is squirming in their seat, maybe sitting on their hands?
To be still takes action.
It takes years of training.
Years of learning to trust God.
It takes an intentional attitude and desire to surrender your will to God’s.
Here is the catch: Once we can become still and fully trust God, is when God can use us to do His will. In the stillness, He speaks to us.
So today, if you really want to be active in growing close to God, go and be still.
