“We need to keep remembering that pleasing God is our only real job and that everything else is silly and self-centered.” – Practicing the Presence of God, Brother Lawrence.
Ask yourself, do you really know what pleases God?
Is it money?
Is it time?
Is it sacrifice?
Is it wisdom?
Is it service?
Is it knowledge?
Is it love?
Is it generosity?
Is it forgiveness?
Is it compassion?
Is it trust?
Is it action?
Is it joy?
Is it gratitude?
Is it mercy?
Is it grace?
Is it obedience?
Is it desire?
Is it perseverance?
Is it confession?
Is it humility?
Is it worship?
Is it prayer?
Is it submission?
Is it stillness?
Is it admiration?
Is it fear?
Is it kindness?
Is it peace?
Is it patience?
Is it acceptance?
Have you figured it out yet? It’s right there in front of you!
It’s none of these – yet all of these. These by themselves are not the answer, yet these as a result of your seeking the answer are all right.
It was the question that pleased God not the answer.
It was you putting your attention on Him, seeking what was important to Him, caring about Him, wanting to please Him, making His desire your priority.
It is impossible for any human to succeed at everything on this list (and I’m sure I missed many others that could have been listed). It would be exhausting and wrought with failure if we were to try to succeed at all of them every day.
But to ask the question, “to seek to please God”, prepares your heart to allow God to work in and through you to manifest what’s most needed for Him to choose from this list to accomplish.
