Mustard Seed

Matthew 17:20 (NIV)
20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

A mustard seed is exceptionally tiny and yet Jesus tells us with that small amount of faith nothing would be impossible.

When he rebukes the disciples he states how little faith they had.

How can they have less faith than a mustard seed?

How can we have so little faith?

I find it amazing that God didn’t set the standard of faith to be the size of a mountain.

Yet what is it about faith that we can’t sum up a mustard seed amount?

We need to remember that Jesus points out that the quantity of our faith is not the standard, it’s who our faith is based on that matters.

I suppose we could have a mountain of faith in a gold statue of a bull just as the Israelites did, but it would produce nothing.

But a mustard seed of faith in the creator of the heavens and earth, now that could move mountains.

I believe we, like the disciples, tried to sum up faith in ourselves to accomplish things.

Matthew 17:19 (NIV)
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

See how they asked, “Why couldn’t we drive out the demons in the little boy?”

They couldn’t, that was the fact. But Jesus could have through them.  Their focus was on their faith, not on the one who their faith was in.

The question might have been, Jesus why didn’t you heal the boy when we prayed to you?

Then Jesus would have to answer accordingly.

What things do I face today that may be of mountain size that my mustard seed of faith, in an almighty God, could move?
