The Closer He Gets

Have you heard people say that they don’t feel God is close to them?  Or pray for God to come into this place or don’t have a sense of God’s presence?  Scripture tells us that God is always with us and will never leave us or forsake us.

Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

1 Chronicles 28:20

“Then David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.”

Is the question does God move in and out, closer or farther away from us? Or, is it us that does the drawing closer or moving nearer or farther?

We say at times of great fear, sickness or trials, that we have felt closer to God. I suggest that it wasn’t a matter of God changing His nearness or availability, but it’s a matter of us becoming poor in spirit, as Jesus talked about in the beatitudes.

Matthew 5:3

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

I sincerely believe that as Brother Lawrence writes in his book, Practicing the Presence of God, that God is always with us everywhere we go 24/7, 365 days a year. We draw closer and experience more of the riches of God each time we chose Him over ourselves. We don’t have to be sick or in the midst of a trial, we can draw near to Him every moment of every day.

Enjoy Jesus today.
